5 Cars That Handle Winter Conditions Like a Boss

Below is a list of winter ready cars noted for their high clearance and excellent handling. We utilized Edmunds and Consumer Reports for the specific ground clearance and miles per gallon. Note that all gas mileage is highway for 2016 models.

1. Subaru Outback

Is it a wagon? Or an SUV? It is so well-loved, it will be whatever you want it to be. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance, it is great for maneuvering snowy roads. New Outbacks have excellent gas mileage at 33 mpg. It’s a vehicle that has been described as “many things to many people.” According to U.S. News and World Report, it has the best-in-class cargo capacity. The only downside is that the standard engine is a little dogged, especially when heading up I-70 to the mountains.

2. Subaru XV Crosstrek

This is a great car if you don’t have to cart around a lot of stuff, including children, as it is more utilitarian than family friendly. The second row of seats fold down to provide more room, but if you wanted to travel with more than one passenger, the Outback or Forrester would be a better choice. The Crosstrek is a twist on the Subaru Impreza sedan, and while it shares positive handling characteristics with it the Impreza, it has increased capability in adverse conditions thanks to its raised suspension. The Crosstrek boasts 8.7 inches clearance and gets up to 31 mpg on the highway.

3. Subaru Forester

Do big fluffy dogs come standard with these? We often see man’s best friend with his head poking out of Foresters and why not? They have lots of room for cargo, friends, kids, or your canine companion. The Forester gets 32 mpg on the highway and has the same clearance as the Outback and Crosstrek. Another bonus? It has very little road noise.

4. Audi Q5

This sleek vehicle has slightly less clearance with 7.87 inches but no fear, it is a luxury vehicle so driving it is a delight! It gets 27 mpg on the highway. You can see how well it performs in snow here. This is a sharp looking, high performance vehicle. Plus, with so many Subarus out there, you will find it easily in a busy parking lot!

5. Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL

Talk about a lot of space. You won’t have to take two cars for friends AND family. Unfortunately, you might be carpool driver more often than you’d like. The Suburban/Yukon boasts 7.9 inches of clearance but it has the worst gas mileage on this list with 23 mpg.
